Big Holes Everywhere

Today started off as many Mondays start, a bit slow but steady! Rather uneventful. It seemed a bit dull so I didn’t have much hope in getting down to my garden.

There was some work in for me (I work online) so I thought I’d clear it then do some cleaning and prep. for someone who is going to replace my old draughty windows.

As I may have mentioned, here, nothing is ever the same. Every single day is different and so today was no exception.

Around mid morning there were some funny noises coming from outside. They spooked our dogs who rushed out to investigate from my little balcony.

When I got up to peer out of the window, very gingerly so as not to be seen, all was revealed! It was a man. Not an ordinary man but one from the water company. He had removed a drain cover and was looking down the hole.

The water company have been trying to trace a leak for a while now and about six months ago there were four or five said water workers peering down the same hole which resulted in nothing.

They had asked me to flush my toilet then came and looked at the meter. “Oh no, you’ve got a leak,” they said. “None of your taps are on and the meter’s going round and round.” The colour drained from my face as I was thinking about the expense and even more so as all of us had just been told that bills and costs were rising, and a lot.

Just before I collapsed with worry, we realised that the cistern was still filling up from the flush that they’d told me to do…….emergency, and fainting, avoided!

Back to today. I get another influx of work around midday so after that I had a very light lunch. I have spent the last few days just eating, and eating. I like to feel healthy and used to play tennis regularly but I haven’t been able to get back into it since the beginning of the Covid pandemic. I have been feeling rather slow and lethargic and I don’t like to eat too much heavy food.

Here where I live, if you feel this way or maybe even a bit under the weather, they say you should eat just white food. Plain, no fancy flavours or sauces. Examples are plain rice, potatoes or pasta. You are allowed parmisan cheese as it is said to be very good for you. No alcohol or coffee or tea.

Tea is actually seen as bad for you here as it makes you agitated. I was told off by my doctor some years ago because I admitted to having three to four cups a day! Ah well. I can’t stop now!

When I looked out of my window a couple of hours later, the man was moving further down the little street towards my garden but stopped to go under an arch way. Some drilling began and a short time later there were two holes in my little street with us still none the wiser as to what was going on. As mentioned above though, there has been a lot of bother with a leak of some sort which, really should be put right in these times of water shortages.

I thought I’d grab a photo to show you. I hope it gets fixed soon because there’s no way down to my garden. Also I’m worried about my actual garden because there is a drain cover there which I discovered when I was making a dry stone wall and levelling the top terrace of the garden! There’s a big pipe which runs through it too.

You can just see the light at the bottom of the street which drops down into my garden. Those holes look as though they’re going in the wrong direction to me! The one positive that I’m taking away from all of this is that my kitchen sponge which blew off the balcony has been found. Hurrah. I think it will be good for cleaning my garden furniture but not much more.

The man duly knocked off when it was time and if it doesn’t rain, I’m sure he’ll be back tomorrow!

The evening turned into a lovely one with a lovely sunset and walm balmy air. Below are the two views from front and back of my house.

I finished the evening editing a video for YouTube. I’ve decided to try hard to put one out every so often to illustrate my rustic life and to compliment this blog. My channel is called Jan’s Rustic Life I hope that you will be kind as I am new to this and still have a long way to go. I’m determined to improve my filming and editing skills to make new videos better to watch.
